How to Use the HyFlex Method to Teach Online and In Person at the Same Time

Faculty and instructors are facing instructional challenges never faced before from having to rapidly move their courses online. They have learned a lot, but have a sense “they can do more!”. Faculty and instructors are also starting to realize not all of their students will be in class or online next year – there will be more “hybrid” teaching which requires a new, flexible approach.

Questions from faculty include:

  • How do we continue to successfully engage students in their learning?
  • How do we support students who have anxiety about returning to the classroom but still want to push ahead with their program of studies?
  • How do we continue instruction for students who cannot be on campus for a variety of reasons, including the need to self-isolate due to exposure to COVID-19?
  • How do we teach students in class and online at the same time?
  • How does assessment work when some students are in class, some are online and some switch between the two?

Four takeaways from this webinar:

  • Learn how to use this flexible course framework that offers a combination of online, synchronous, and face-to-face options (hybrid) in a course where students are able to choose when and how they attend (flexible).
  • Develop successful strategies to engage online and in class students in a single class session.
  • Understand how HyFlex options prepare an institution (or program) for any other situation requiring an immediate shift to fully online.
  • Learn how assessments for and of learning can work when students are studying the same course in class and online.
