Helping International Students Thrive in Class
Session by Dr. Ismel Gonzalez on Helping International Students Thrive in Class
As educators, we share a deep commitment to the success of every student. As the post-secondary international student population in Canada has increased dramatically in the last 10 years, university educators are asking critical questions. Are we serving international students in the classroom effectively? What can we do in our own classrooms to create an environment in which international students thrive and grow, academically and personally? How can we deepen our knowledge and expand our professional practice not only to support these students, but to celebrate their presence in our classrooms, enrich their learning experience and, ultimately, increase the retention of these students?
This workshop will facilitate an important dialogue on who are English Language Learners and the language proficiency of many of the international students who are accepted at Lakehead University. In particular, the workshop will address the most critical question educators are asking themselves as individuals: what can I do right now and in my classroom to ensure that these students have the same chance to succeed as their domestic counterparts.
